Elul 5784 – Hilchos Teshuva 9: Living in the Presence of Hashem

Picking up on what we discussed yesterday in terms of the centrality of Boshah in the Vidui, so let's jump ahead for a moment to פרק ב הלכה א. The Rambam in פרק ב הלכה א based on the Gemara in Yoma

איזו היא תשובה גמורה זה שבאה לידו דבר שעבר בו ואפשר בידו לעשות ופירש ולא עשה מפני התשובה לא מיראה ולא מכשלון כח.

So an illustration of Teshuvah Gemurah is when the exact circumstances of the Cheit are replicated and the only variable is the person's response, the person's reaction owing to his Teshuvah. The Rambam says Keitzad?

הרי שבא על אשה בעבירה ולאחר זמן נתייחד עמה והוא עומד באהבתו בה ובכח גופו ובמדינה שעבר בה.

Again, all circumstances are the same, however this time ופירש ולא עבר הרי זה בעל תשובה גמורה. What's the proof text that this is Teshuvah Gemurah? Hu sheShlomo omeir, the pasuk in Kohelet וזכור את בוראך בימי בחורותיך, so it should be

בימי בחורותיך עד שלא יבואו ימי הרעה והגיעו שנים אשר תאמר אין לי בהם חפץ.

So the Halacha is that Teshuvah should be done at the same stage of life as the Cheit. But the pasuk doesn't say anything about Teshuvah. The pasuk says Uzchor es bor'echa. No, so you see this equation that the common denominator and on a certain level the essence of every Cheit is אין זה אלא היות השם יתברך רחוק מכליותיו and therefore the essence of Teshuvah is Uzchor es bor'echa. This theme echoes again in the famous Rambam about Shofar,

אף על פי שתקיעת שופר בראש השנה גזירת הכתוב רמז יש בו כלומר עורו ישנים משנתכם והקיצו נרדמים מתרדמתכם וחפשו במעשיכם וחזרו בתשובה וזכרו בוראכם.

So the Kol Shofar which is the wake up call to Teshuvah, so ultimately is a call for Vezichru bor'echem, that we should be mindful and aware of Hakadosh Baruch Hu and of being in His presence.
